What are Dust Mites
Dust Mites are very tiny microscopic creatures or insects like pests that are very similar to spiders. The average size of Dust Mite is only 1/4 to 1/3 millimeters long and you can see them under a microscope. Dust mites can cause serious allergy and asthma. Prevention should be made to avoid allergic reactions from dust mites living in your Bed and other furniture types.
Dust Mites can be found anywhere in your house since they travel through dust, they can reach anyplace. But most commonly dust mites are found in warm and humid places like Beds, Sofas, Mattresses, Curtains, Couches, Carpets and other household goods.
Note: Dust Mites and Bed Bugs are two different species and they shouldn’t be confused with each other. Dust Mites don’t leave bites on your skin however Bed Bugs do leave bites on your skin.

Dust mites can cause allergies. Allergy from Dust Mites can have symptoms like sneezing and runny nose. Dust Mites can also cause skin rashes. Dust Mites leave behind skin and fecal matter that can also trigger allergies. Dust Mites can cause asthma in children and in some cases they can worsen the condition. Why Dust Mites live in Beds
The reason why dust mites live in our bed is that they feed on dead skin flakes of humans and pets. On average humans can shed up to 1 to 2 grams of skin a day that is enough to feed one million dust mites. Also they like to live in warm places which is a vital factor for their life as they can’t survive harsh environments. The average life span of male dust mite is over a month while female dust mites can live up to 3 months. In your bed, dust mites can be found under bed sheet, inside pillow covers or inside/under your mattress.
Prevention against Dust Mites
Following Prevention must be taken to keep dust mites away from your beds and bed sheets.
Wash your bed sheets at least once a week.
Use dust proof bed sheets, pillow covers and mattress covers.
Use High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter (HEPA) to keep air clean of Dust Mites.
Use Synthetic Bed Sheets since they are better in prevention against Dust Mites than organic Bed Sheets.
Wash Bed sheets in water over 80 degrees Celsius.
Wash Pillows, Cushions and Stuff Toys that you keep on your beds.
Keep humidity level of the room below 50%.
Use Vacuum Cleaner daily or once in two days.
Freeze Bed sheets that cannot be washed or Bed Sheets that are Non-washable.
Use wet cloth to remove dust instead of dry one.
Change your Bed sheet once a weak.
Sun-dry your bed sheets after washing them.
Use effective Laundry Detergents for Dust Mites while washing your Bed Sheets.
